Thursday, April 14th, 2011

While you can’t become a great cook just from reading, it certainly helps so you have the knowledge to call on when you’re actually cooking in your own kitchen or at work (if you work at a restaurant).

Here are a couple tips I’ve compiled that I frequently use each and every day I cook.

Hopefully some of these will help you like they’ve helped me!

1. If you accidentally put in too much salt into your dish, you can re-balance the saltiness by adding chopped potatoes, tomatoes, or even a teaspoon of sugar. This will help bring the saltiness back down to a normal level.

Preparing Delicious Food Items for Dinner

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Taking dinner on Sunday is very enjoyable and full of excitement. However I have found many times that on certain days people like to take dinner outside. They don’t feel it urgent to cook food at home and enjoy the evening. However, so far as my knowledge goes, they have lack of confidence to prepare food items in their own kitchen. You should be a good planner and need to pay huge concentration to select the items for cooking nicely so that in the long run you will be free to eat various delicious dishes on Sunday evening. It is a common scenario that people like to purchase the packed of fried chickens for eating on Sunday evening. They have no intention to bring some changes to the food items.

In different ways you can spend the Sunday evening by preparing good dishes. You can prepare yourself for making casserole or dessert which will be very tasty at the dinner table. If it is small get together at your home, you will have made the proper arrangement of the several dishes for the guests and invitees. There will be everyone at the dinner table at your home they will appreciate you for your wonderful dish items which you have made only for the Sunday special.

Green Cooking for Healthy Living

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Green cooking is a rather new term being used and its goal is to promote eco-friendly eating habits and lifestyles. People seem to be joining the organic food fan club, but some do not realize that they can actually do more to promote healthy living. The act of cooking is a little-known creator of greenhouse gases and green cooking helps individuals to reduce their carbon footprint in the kitchen.

Cooks can broil, bake, and grill their foods in ways that are more environmentally friendly. This will cut down on the amount of fossil fuels used and every reduction makes a difference. Conserving water and choosing appliances and cookware generate little carbon are other things that can be done to make the kitchen a greener place.

Ovens tend to waste almost 94 percent of the fuel that they consume while heating a meal. Doing things such as heating ingredients on the stove top and baking multiple items at once will reduce fuel consumption. Turning down the heat on the stove top once water begins to boil or cooking items in sub-boiling water whenever possible will also reduce the amount of gas or electricity used.

Low quality cookware tends to become flimsy after about a year and may wear out within five years. These pots and pans are not efficient when it comes to using fuel, so discarding them actually represents a step forward in the kitchen greening process. Those who cook should instead purchase energy efficient, affordable cookware such as nontoxic nonstick pots and pans. These products can be found online and in specialty stores.

Green cooking involves not only the cooking methods themselves, but also the cookware used and other practices within the kitchen. Taking steps to reduce the amount of wasted fuel and thus decrease carbon emissions will make the cooking process more environmentally friendly. These types of behaviors will make the world a better place for current and future generations.

Flouring and Coating Your Chicken

Monday, April 26th, 2010

There are two basic ways to flour the chicken, and which one you use will depend on what you prefer and probably on what Grandma did. The paper bag method involves putting spices and flour into a strong paper bag, then dropping the chicken in a few pieces at a time. Close the bag and shake it for even coating with little to no mess.

Using a shallow dish to coat your chicken requires putting the flour and spices into a dish such as a pie pan or casserole, then rolling them in the mixture. This still coats well, and it allows you to see more easily, what you are doing. However, it does result in a bit more mess. Most people will use one method or the other according to personal preference and what their Grandma used.

Remember that the amount of chicken you work with should correspond to the recipe – three pounds at a time is common. You will want to trim excess skin and fat before cooking. People who use boneless chicken, boneless skinless chicken, or who trim all the skin will need to cook their chicken for less time than those using bone-in chicken or frying an entire bird. No matter what you do, take care and pay attention and you will get great fried chicken to match those old summer memories.

Hosting and Catering a Barbecue Party Outdoors

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Summer is slowly making its way here and we are all very excited: so many summer activities. One of my favorite ones has to be cooking with a barbecue. This year will be special: my brother will be hosting a huge barbecue party in the beginning of May. He will be catering for about 55 people: it’s going to be a lot of beef, chicken and vegetables to entertain the crowd. I had to argue with him however that having it outdoors would be far better than just having an indoor barbecue party. Here is a list of reasons I gave him to defend my stance on hosting and catering a barbecue party outdoors rather than having everything done inside of his home.

1. The weather is finally getting nicer and people want to be outdoors. This year, New York had horridly cold weather and people couldn’t get out much and now that the weather was ok, an outdoor barbecue would be a perfect way to celebrate.

2. The smoke. If you are catering for so many people, there will be a lot of food being barbecued and the fumes could gather up causing an unpleasant smell and destroying the ambiance. Outdoors however this would be no problem since the smoke would not be trapped in a closed space.

3. Outdoor barbecues can be more spacious and beneficial for the guests. If catering to such a party, a lot of space will be needed and if it is indoors and in a small house, then no one will really be comfortable.

These are the three major reasons why it would be better to host and cater a barbecue party outside than inside. Since my brother is preparing food for over 50 people I also recommended that perhaps it would be wise for him to search for some professionals in barbecue catering to help so that way the day of the party he does not get overstressed.
